ICWUDT: Andromeda

“In Greek mythology, Andromeda is the daughter of the Aethiopian king Cepheus and his wife Cassiopeia. When Cassiopeia’s hubris leads her to boast that Andromeda is more beautiful than the Nereids, Poseidon, influenced by Hades, sends a sea monster, Cetus, to ravage Aethiopia as divine punishment.[1] Andromeda is stripped and chained naked to a rock as a sacrifice to sate the monster, but is saved from death by Perseus.”

Last Google Search of the night strikes again!! Found Andromeda!! Or the geographical land feature that I believe to be the basis of the Andromeda myth. Was another relatively easy one to boot. As again, all the pertinent “directions” to find Andromeda were given and widely available:

1. “Andromeda is stripped and chained naked to a rock

– What? Removing all the noise we have “chained to a rock”. Meaning “she” is of the Earth and most likely a geographical land anomaly.

2. “Andromeda is the daughter of the Aethiopian king Cepheus and his wife Cassiopeia” – Andromeda was duly chained to a rock on the coast

– Where? The coast of Ethiopia.

Again, everything you will ever need was provided. What am I looking for, a Geographical land anomaly. And where will it be found, along the coast of Ethiopia. Directions acquired now find me a map. See below for a zoomed out view of the Ethiopian coast line:

Playing in the back of my mind is a scene from Clash of the Titans. Where they walk her along that stone pathway in a procession, that led out to a small peninsula that jutted out into the water. With that meandering in the back of my mind, I start my search of this area. In this initial view, I noticed the interesting formation off the coast towards the middle right of the the map. See below for highlighted area:

In glancing around the remaining coastal area, this seems to be the only unique feature I could find. Here is a closer look at this area:

Still thinking “they walk her along that stone pathway in a procession, that led out to a small rock formation that jutted out into the water”, I couldn’t help but notice a “stone pathway” leading to a “jutted out” rock formation above.  At this point, I am pretty sure Andromeda will be found here. Now that I have an area identified, I started looking for Andromeda’s “face”. Is the outline of the “jutted out” rock formation above a “face”? If I zoom in, turn it left, right, upside down or sideways, can I see a discernible facial feature? If no, then I have to search closer and examine further, the formations along this jutted out rock formation. Below is a closer view of the this land area:

From the above, I initially thought this whole outline could look like a possible face, if turned counter clockwise. Upon doing so, I decided it wasn’t definitive enough. Not enough clear facial components, although I still find the shape interesting. In deciding that, I needed to look further. Closer. Actually if you look close enough now, you can see Andromeda. I am looking right at her. The myths are right, she is gorge! But before her unveiling for those who cannot see her, I wanted to quickly review some Historical pieces of Art that portray Andromeda. I want you to “see” how she is specifically portrayed or painted. I want you to “see” the subtleties that hint to her location.  Here are those pictures:

Take special notice of her head. See that it faces left. See that it protrudes out from the main rock. These are all subtle hints to her location. Remember, this is a map. Or can be read like a map.

Again, head protruding out and to the left.

And again.

Once more.

Though not facing left, the protrusion is of importance here.

That should suffice for now. There are many more depictions without the protrusion subtleties, but the majority depict the head facing left. These are two very important clues in finding Andromeda and proving the finding. Now remember, I am looking for something that protrudes out from its rock body and faces left. What are the chances you say? Pretty dam good! See Andromeda below:

Coast of Ethiopia? Check. Geographical land anomaly? Check. Faces left? Check. Protrudes out from its main rock body? Check Check Check! This I believe is Andromeda. Or the land feature the Andromeda myth is based off of. Let that sink in and marinate for awhile. But this is what I believe all myths are referring to. Not some sort of fantastical world, but something real and of this world. Its late. I’m out. This will be added to my Findings list with a to be continued…
